Registration modernization will phase out MC numbers across carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders, streamlining compliance and fraud prevention by consolidating authority and history under a single USDOT record.

What’s Changing
MC numbers will no longer be issued or used.
The USDOT number becomes the single, authoritative identifier for motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders.
Authority types will be shown within the USDOT record (e.g., suffixes), no new vehicle markings required.
Targeted phase-out date: October 1, 2025 (timing tied to the Unified Registration System rollout).
Why This Matters
Simplifies compliance – one identifier instead of two.
Reduces fraud & double-brokering – all history tied to one USDOT record.
Improves enforcement & transparency – audits and safety data centralized under the USDOT.
Streamlines onboarding – shippers, brokers, and customers will shift to USDOT-based verification.
What You Should Do Now
Verify your USDOT number is active and current (file your MCS-150).
Begin updating documents, contracts, permits, insurance, and marketing to list your USDOT number instead of MC numbers.
Ensure your systems and portals are aligned with USDOT-only identifiers.
Use FMCSA’s SAFER/URS databases for USDOT verification going forward.
